There are some unmistakable, unbelievable, just perfect coffees in the world. One such coffee comes from what I believe to be one of the few absolutely perfect microclimates of coffee production in the world, the leeward slope of the Ilamatepec volcano in Santa Ana, El Salvador. Those who know me are accustomed to hearing me effuse about this particular slope of this particular volcano, and are used to hearing me declare that every single one of my favorite Salvadors, and most of my favorite Central American coffees, have come from this same slope. I am not alone in this belief. A disproportionate number of Cup of Excellence-winning coffees have come from this very microclimate.

So, what do you get when you skim the cream off the coffees from three of the most famous farms on this slope? Coffee Nirvana, that's what.

Coffee superstar Aida Batlle at Finca Kiliminjaro. Photo by Counter Culture Coffee.Finca Mauritania, Finca Kilimanjaro, and Finca Los Alpes are three farms on the leeward slope of the Ilamatepec volcano, all managed by one farmer, the famous Ms. Aida Batlle. Two of these three farms have won Cup of Excellence prizes. Coffee from these farms has also provided the focal point to barista competition-winning coffees from Chapel Hill to Scandinavia. All are among the most sought-after coffees in the rarefied world of exceptionally great coffee. Much to the delight of coffee lovers everywhere, Ms. Batlle has prepared a unique, "Grand Reserve" of peaberry coffee beans from these three farms.

Peaberries are the saffron of the coffee world. Just as the precious saffron threads must be plucked by hand from the blossoming crocus, so must the peaberries be separated by hand from the other “flatbeans” that make up the bulk of the coffee tree’s produce. Less than five percent of coffee beans are peaberries, and they posses a singular intensity of flavor which, when they are separated from other beans, deliver a focused, transcendent coffee experience.

Coffee cherries inspected by hand at Finca Kilimanjaro in El Salvador. Photo by Counter Culture Coffee. In Aida's Grand Reserve, we have the rarest of coffees: an all-peaberry selection from three of the best small coffee farms in the world. Given the rarity of the peaberry, and the exclusivity of the farms themselves, this is a coffee of extraordinarily limited supply. For this reason, and because of its incredible quality, this coffee fetches an extraordinary price. Friends, it is worth it. A honeysuckle-sweet, butterscotch and caramel fragrance draw the coffee lover into an immensely complex cup, teeming with notes of cherry, melon, dark chocolate, fig, spice, cedar, pepper, and brown sugar. The complexity of the coffee is matched only by its elegance and balance. This is a coffee meant to be savored from a bone-china cup or even a brandy snifter—it's that great.

An extremely limited amount of this coffee exists in the world, so it will only be available for a very short time. Please enjoy it while it is here.
